Creative Learning Academy uses the play-based Creative Curriculum, which is aligned with the Department of Education’s early childhood learning standards, to implement developmentally appropriate practice for toddlers, 3- and 4-year-olds. We cater to four closely related and often overlapping areas: social/emotional; physical; cognitive; and, language development. Focusing on these areas, our classroom environment encourages children to experiment and pursue their own interest with a curriculum that promotes learning through: functional, constructive, dramatic/pretend, and games with rules.

In our teaching we highlight the balance between applying general knowledge of child development with the knowledge acquired when a relationship is formed with each child and family. Each classroom is set-up with centers which include books, blocks, dramatic play, math, art, gross motor and fine motor. Outdoor play is important to a child’s physical development and is included in both the morning and afternoon schedule. Self-selection or “free play” is a daily part of the curriculum and means a child has the opportunity to choose which center or activity he/she participates in. This promotes creative expression and development of important social skills.

“Free-play” (also called child-initiated activities, free choice, self selection) activities are incorporated into the morning and afternoon schedule. During free-play, teachers actively participate with the children by asking questions about what the children are doing, participating in their pretend pay, reading books when prompted, encouraging children to try new activities or play with a new toy, etc. Free-play is another op portunity for a child to grow socially and cognitively through the development of relationships.

Outdoor play is incorporated into the daily schedule for morning and afternoon. Outdoor play is an opportunity for children to run, jump, climb and use their bodies in ways that would otherwise be unsafe in an indoor classroom. In addition, a large amount of social interaction
takes place when children play outdoors. Because they are engaged in fewer teacher-directed activities and more child-directed play, children are able to choose their friends and who to interact with.

The daily schedule and activities create a balance between active and quiet times; large and small group,; individual activities; small and large muscle activities; indoor and out door play times; as well as times for self-selection and teacher-directed activities.
Consistency from day-to-day is particularly important to the overall well-being of the children and class room environment. Children thrive on consistency! Routines will be maintained whenever possible for arrivals and departures; meals and snacks; resting or nap times; and personal care routines.

Teaching Strategies GOLD™  is the assessment tool used by the programs to evaluate and track each child’s induvial development during their time at Creative Learning Academy. It is an on-going assessment system. This means teachers are continually watching, observing, and documenting each child’s development. The same tool is used from toddler through pre-k to allow a more complete picture of your child’s development. By tracking development, our teachers are able to plan activities that are appropriate for each child’s developmental abilities.
